President’s Letter

Hello neighbors,

I hope all are staying afloat!

A quick reminder of the Second Annual VRA Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, August 8 at the Zionsville Golf Course. Last year’s winning team of Brad Schnabel, John Gil and Kerry Dienhart were an impressive 7 under par. If you see Brad, John or Kerry around the village, ask them if they have been taking good care of the Trophy! Please contact Todd Rech at tcrech@ymail.com with questions or to sign up.

Please note that the next VRA meeting will be on August 18 at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July,

Scott

Village News and Events

VRA Golf Outing is August 8

The second annual VRA golf outing will be held on Saturday, August 8th at the Zionsville Golf Course. We are planning a 3 PM tee time with a similar 4 person scramble/best ball format as last years event. We will play 9 holes with a light meal following at the course.
We had a fantastic time last year, and was a great way to have some fun with our neighbors. Participants can once again form their own teams, or sign up as an individual, and be placed on a team.

Please contact Todd Rech at tcrech@ymail.com with questions or to sign up. The estimated cost is $30 which will include a 9 holes, a cart, prizes and the meal.

The “Music Man” comes to Zionsville!
by Beth Bugbee

It’s July and time again for the wonderful concerts at the gazebo in Lion’s Park. This year all four concerts will focus on Broadway musicals. Remember to bring a chair or a blanket-that’s all you need. They even provide hot dogs, chips and drinks for a donation to the park.

Just a little reminder (warning)! Show tunes have a tendency to make people break into song or dance. Please be considerate of your fellow audience members. If you have never sung on key before, you are not going to start now. Come on, you know who you are. If you can’t resist the urge to break into song or dance, just step away to where you have a little space around you and let it rip. Everyone will appreciate it! Have fun!

Speaking of Lion’s Park . . .
by Kathy Scales Brown

I absolutely love the warm rain of summer. Walking in puddles in my flip flops. Gardening by the hour, soaked to the skin, thrilled how effortlessly the weeds pull out of the ground. Spending an entire day reading. Falling asleep to the sound of rain . . .except this year . . . rain is keeping me awake!!!!!

I blame it on the Eagle Creek flood of 1957 – it was the worst of the three my family experienced while living in Speedway and the worst Zionsville has ever experienced. Eagle Creek spilled over so quickly we were told to evacuate immediately and leave everything behind. I was a terrified 7 year old, sloshing through fast-running, filthy water desperately hanging on to my mother’s hand. For Zionsville, it was devastating. There were deaths. Eagle Creek had quickly filled Lion’s Park, spilling over onto Sycamore Street, taking a bus with it.

Wouldn’t you know, all these years later I live next door to Lion’s Park and Eagle Creek runs behind our house. I never gave it a thought at the time. I was a girl in love. The boy owned the house. The first time Eagle Creek spilled out of its banks into our backyard I refused to go to bed. Flashlight in hand, running shoes on, precious documents packed in a waterproof zip-lock bag, I hung over our deck ready to make a dash straight up Cedar Street. It’s been 25 years and I still do this year after year after year while David peacefully sleeps the night away. If Eagle Creek spills over and it’s daytime, he starts calling family shouting “Bring the canoes and kayaks! Eagle Creek’s out!!” and back and forth they go “checking everything out”. The minute Eagle Creek spills into our backyard and it is daytime it takes every bit of bravery I can muster to dash to Lion’s Park to warn as many people as I can the waters are headed their way. I can’t bear the thought of what could happen to those in the park if Eagle Creek was in a big hurry as in 1957.

Constant rain this year also has me in a dither on Wednesdays. I’m on the Lincoln Park Concert Series committee. Actually, beginning the next morning after a Wednesday evening concert, I’m already watching for next Wednesday’s weather. If the weather is indeed iffy on Wednesday, the committee stands by at 5:30 pm anxiously watching for a text from the sound man. If it’s a “no go in the park”, it means we make a mad dash to the Lion’s Park clubhouse to turn on the air-conditioning, set up every chair we can find, then I make a mad dash back to the park to begin directing everyone to the clubhouse who didn’t see our posting on Facebook. So, since our concerts continue through July, that’s a lot of dithering I’ll be doing.

It’s 2:00am, our dining room ceiling is leaking. I look out the window to see high winds and a downpour. I’m frantically placing buckets and moving furniture. David has slept through it all and gets up after I finally doze off. Something is wrong. This is summer!

Did I say I love the warm summer rain?

The Village Gourmet Garden and Beverage Society

As Eagle Creek is spilling over into Lions Park and Elm Street Green, let’s talk about our next Garden party!

We will be visiting the gardens of Jerry Cieslak on Friday, July 10. Just in case, we will use Friday, July 17, as our backup date. Jerry is a long-time Zionsville plumber, owner of Cieslak Pump Well Water System Service. If you google his name, you will probably find several newspaper articles and photos. Because he is a plumber, his irrigation systems are amazing. His flowers – gorgeous. One shipment alone contained 55,000 seedlings (?), but he uses high school girls and volunteers to help plant as quickly as possibly. He loves to have visitors.

Please RSVP if you plan to join us.

RSVP to fordmoniq@sbcglobal.net for this month’s event and please include a cell number in case of cancelation
