Dear Neighbors,
Summer is flying by! It is hard to believe it is August. As summer comes to an end, I’ve been thinking ahead to next year. If you are interested in serving on the board for the 2017 year or to learn more, please contact me at president@zvra.com. Serving on the board is a great way to have your voice heard and to help make an impact on the decisions that affect our community.
A big concern for many people in the village is traffic. For our next meeting on October 25th, Mayor Tim Haak will be sharing a general overview of the plans to alleviate traffic in the village. Additionally, many members have expressed interest in serving on the various committees for the town (BZA, Planning Commission Committee, etc.). Mayor Haak will be speaking on how the people on these committees are appointed. It would be great to have villagers serving on these committees so that the Village can be represented.
I would also like to encourage villagers to be current with your dues. You’re only considered a member of the VRA if you have paid for this year’s membership. Becoming a member is easy. You can pay at the next meeting, village picnic, or mail your check with your information to:

Meet your Neighbor by Beth Bugbee
Dan and Michele Schlegelmilch moved to their home on Pine Street in 2003.
They wanted an older home and a strong neighborhood where there was a bond between neighbors. That is exactly what they found. Together they have three children who are now adults. Dan is a financial advisor and Michele is a Senior Administative Secretary in the Cardiology Department of the IU School of Medicine.
Outside of their work life, they have an equally full personal life. They share many of the same interests. They are both dedicated runners and both ran in the last mini marathon. They also enjoy cooking and a love of reading. In fact, Dan built floor to ceiling bookshelves in their living room to display their 1,500 books!
Their favorite part of our town is the parks and trail system. Their favorite restaurants are Happy Kitchen and the Friendly. They are also addicted to the olive loaf at The Wine Guy.
As they consider the future of our town, Michele wants it to remain “a town within a park” and Dan wants the town to develop a road system to divert traffic away from town. Probably many of their neighbors would agree with that future!
Town Council Insights by Josh Garrett
I was lucky enough to attend a ceremony on July 13 at ZFD Station 93 for the swearing in of five new firefighter / EMTs. Despite it being a stormy day, it was a very nice ceremony. Mayor Haak did a nice job getting each new member through their badging oath. It was also the dedication ceremony of our newest fire truck. This new truck is a big deal for the department as it gives them additional capabilities.
It was a great opportunity to meet some of the dedicated firefighters at the station and learn more about this new rig. A few random facts that I picked up speaking with the driver:
- The truck serves as both pumper and ladder truck, replacing two vehicles with this new one.
- It’s called a quint truck because it does five functions. Those functions are a pumping water, aerial ladder (137 feet), ground ladder, water storage (it has 500 gallons on-board) and carrying fire hoses.
- The truck weighs 80,000 pounds and has a 600 HP Cummins diesel engine yet is “easy” to drive. I’m qualifying that by saying that Scott (the driver of the B shift) might think it’s easy to drive but there is no way I could handle something like that!
- It can pump/spray 2,000 gallons of water a minute
These trucks are designed from the ground up and each one is unique. This entire process took over two years and had active involvement by many within the department. Fire Chief VanGorder told me that the company that built the truck (E-ONE) was so impressed with the work done by Zionsville that they are recommending our configuration to future departments looking for the best turn-key ladder truck. It will even have a special designation of a “Z” in the serial number.
It is a firefighter tradition that a new truck is pushed in by hand when it is added to the fleet. This tradition goes back to the days when fire trucks did not have engines and needed to be pushed in after each run. We did our best; mercifully they also put the truck in reverse to help us move those 40 tons.
While you don’t want to see this truck parked in your driveway, it’s good to know we have the trained personnel and equipment if it was needed. I’m consistently impressed with our fire department and each interaction I’ve had with them.

Farmer’s Market Recipe of the Month

We are in the peak of summer! Summer is the best time of the year because of the wonderful produce you can find at the Zionsville Farmers’ Market. The recipe for this month is Zucchini Noodles (aka Zoodles) with Pesto and Roasted Tomatoes. This dish is perfect for August because it is light and guilt free! Not to mention, all of the ingredients can be found at the Farmers’ Market!

ZUCCHINI NOODLES WITH PESTO AND ROASTED TOMATOES
Serves 2
Ingredients:
- 4- 5 medium zucchinis
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes
- extra virgin olive oil
- 3 tablespoons pesto
- 2 tablespoons pine nuts
- sea salt and pepper
Directions:
– Preheat oven to 250 degrees
– Clean and halve one pint of cherry tomatoes and toss in a splash of extra virgin olive oil until evenly coated. Sprinkle with a generous dash of sea salt and spread on a cookie sheet, seed side up.
– Roast tomatoes for 90 minutes
– Use a julienne peeler to create zucchini noodles (stop peeling when you get down to the seeds)
– In a large mixing bowl combine noodles with two tablespoons of pesto (more to your preference) and mix well.
– To serve: divide noodles into two bowls, top with cherry tomatoes, sprinkle with pine nuts and serve.

Indiana’s Bicentennial Torch to Travel Through Zionsville
Sponsored by Zionsville Cultural District
When: Thursday, October 13th, from noon – 3pm
Where: Lincoln Park (corner of Oak and 1st), Zionsville
Indiana’s Bicentennial Torch will be traveling through Zionsville October 13th and making a brief stop at Lincoln Park at approximately 1:30pm – 1:45pm.
The torch is coming from Montgomery County to Boone County, Lebanon then to Zionsville. The torch will go from Lincoln Park down Oak St., south on Main, east on Sycamore/116th, then a hand-off to Hamilton County will occur at the Zionsville First Presbyterian Church at 116th Michigan Rd. We would like to line the route with cheers of excitement as the torch travels through our town!
Lincoln impersonator, Danny Russel, will be performing at the park during the welcome party. Ice cream, pie, and refreshments will be served with music and a line-up of speakers.
